Mumbai gets roughly 2,200 mm of rain between June and September. That much water floods the drain network, saturates plinth soil and keeps indoor humidity above 80% for weeks — a combination that pushes almost every common pest indoors at once.
Monsoon pest activity follows a predictable order, which means you can treat ahead of it rather than react to it.
The monsoon pest sequence
- Pre-monsoon (May–early June): winged termites swarm after the first showers; ants shift nests indoors.
- Early monsoon (June–July): drain cockroaches surge as sewer lines back up; millipedes and centipedes appear at ground-floor thresholds.
- Peak monsoon (July–August): mosquito breeding explodes in every stagnant water point; damp-loving silverfish and booklice appear in wardrobes and bookshelves.
- Late monsoon (August–September): rodents move indoors as burrows flood; fungal damp attracts flies and gnats.
Before the rains: the pre-monsoon checklist
- Clear terrace and balcony drains, and check that all floor traps have covers.
- Empty and scrub plant saucers, water tanks, coolers and the fridge drip tray weekly — these are the top mosquito breeding sites in Mumbai flats.
- Seal gaps around pipe entries, AC drain holes and window frames with sealant or steel wool.
- Get general pest control done in May or early June, before the population peaks. A pre-monsoon treatment is far more effective than a mid-monsoon one.
During the rains: what to keep doing
- Dry the kitchen sink area and bathroom floors at night — standing water is what sustains cockroaches indoors.
- Keep wardrobes ventilated and use silica or camphor to cut humidity that attracts silverfish.
- Store dry grain and pulses in airtight containers to prevent weevil and moth activity.
- Do not stack cardboard cartons on the floor; damp cardboard is prime harbourage for cockroaches and silverfish.
Mosquitoes need a source-reduction approach
Aedes mosquitoes — the dengue and chikungunya vectors — breed in clean stagnant water, often inside the home, and complete their cycle in about a week. Fogging alone kills adults and does nothing to the larvae, so numbers rebound within days.
Effective monsoon mosquito control combines weekly source reduction inside the flat, larvicide in tanks and collection points that cannot be emptied, and residual treatment of resting surfaces such as dark corners, curtains and behind furniture. For a building, the terrace, overhead tank surrounds, lift pit and podium drains matter more than individual flats.
